It was formed in 2008 thanks to the efforts of the Island nation of Kiribati, the New England Aquarium and Conservation International. The Aquarium leads periodic expeditions to the area. The current expedition will explore the deep sea surrounding the Phoenix Islands. All of these atolls are the tops of ancient seamounts, which provide a diverse deep-sea habitat for exploration.NEAQhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11096104970335431798noreply@blogger.comBlogger181125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3525356365661982853.post-56026507650452575032016-07-29T11:34:00.000-04:002016-07-29T11:35:38.655-04:002015 Expedition: Black reefs: an under-recognised threat to remote Pacific Island reefsAquarium researchers and staff are on expedition to the remote Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) to study the natural history of the islands, surrounding reefs and connecting open water ecosystems.
